Delfi. Ep wants to designate 2016 european year to fight violence against women

Member of the European Parliament, Deputy Chair of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality Vilija Blinkevičiūtė together with her colleagues from the European Parliament have proposed to announce 2016 a European Year to fight violence against women.

Members of the European Parliament are currently collecting votes needed for the proposal. If the idea is supported by more than a half of MEPs, then the European Commission will have to respond to the initiative.

According to statistics, in Europe every third female over 15 years old suffers gender-based violence. Meanwhile, seven women die in Europe every day due to violence.

It is estimated that violence is a detriment to the whole society, thus the European Commission is encouraged to put forward a directive on combating violence against women. Its provisions should be transposed into national law by all EU Member States.
